What to Write on a Birthday Cake That Fits
Cake lettering isn't like a card — the space is decided before you write. However good the sentence is, if it doesn't fit the surface the bakery breaks the lines wherever it likes or shrinks the writing, and what arrives isn't what you pictured.
So every line here comes with its letter count, spaces left out. Ask the bakery how many letters fit before you order, and keep only the lines that come in under that number.
If you know how many letters fit
Pick the per-line count your bakery gave you and only the phrases that fit will stay. Spaces aren’t counted, and three-line phrases are judged by their longest line. The same number of letters can still run wider in Latin script, so leave yourself a letter of room.
Start with how much fits
The top of a cake has a fixed diameter, so the more letters you add, the smaller the writing gets. For a single line, around fifteen letters is a safe bet, and since the real limit changes from bakery to bakery, asking before you order is the fastest way to know.

When you split it over three lines
When you break it up, keep the middle line the longest — that's what makes the centring sit right on a round cake. And write the line breaks into the order exactly as you want them. Send it as one long line and the bakery decides where it splits, and that's usually not where you'd have put it.

When you add a name or an age
Names aren't the same length, so add the letters of the name to the numbers below. Put the name where ○○ is and count again. An age written as 25 is two characters; written out as twenty-five it's eleven.

Everyone in the room reads it
A cake message is the opposite of a private card. Everyone there reads it, and it stays in the photos. An inside joke needs explaining to the person beside you, and anything the birthday person might rather keep quiet — their age, say — is safer left off the icing.

The short classics
Script and cursive change the width of a line even when the letter count matches — the flourishes and the gaps between words add up faster than you'd think. And if you put a number on it, remember that the age stays in every photo of that cake.

For a partner
A pet name is shorter than a real name, but everyone at the table reads it too. Of the things only you two say, pick the short ones that need no explaining. Putting in the number of years together, or the milestone you're counting down to, saves letters and still says something nobody else gets.

Titles eat letters fast. "Happy Birthday, Grandma" is twenty-one on its own, and that's most of a single line. If you want the name and the title both, shorten the greeting or spend a second line on it.

A funny line lands best in the room it's read in. But cake photos come back years later, and a joke that needs context by then has aged badly. The ones that still read the same in five years last longer.

A kid's cake almost always has the name and the age on it. Those two fill the space quickly, so keep whatever else you add short. An age written as 5 is one character; written out as five it's four.

Things that only matter on a cake
Write the line breaks into the order
Send the message as one run-on line and the bakery picks where it splits. Break the lines yourself, and add how many lines it is at the end — that gives you both something to check against.
A space takes up a slot too
The numbers on this page leave spaces out. On the actual cake a space takes as much room as a letter, so if a line is borderline, count the spaces in as well.
Ask about emoji and symbols first
Some bakeries will pipe a heart or a small drawing by hand; others do letters only. Checking before it goes on the order means no blank spot on the day.
Check that it reads in a photo
Most cake messages end up in photos. Small, crowded lettering disappears on a screen. Dropping one line is the easiest way to make the writing bigger.
